The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made a significant change in the admission process for research programs (PhD) conducted by universities and other higher education institutions (HEIs) across the country. According to the notification issued by the Commission on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, admission to university research programs (PhD Admission 2024) will now be through the National Testing Agency (NTA)’s UGC National Eligibility Test (NET), which will be conducted twice a year (in June and December).
Along with this, it has been stated in the notification for PhD Admission 2024 released by UGC that universities and other HEIs will not conduct separate entrance exams for admissions. However, these institutions have been given the exemption to conduct interviews at the second stage for the selection of candidates for admissions. In this regard, UGC has specified that the selection process for PhD admissions will have a weightage of 70% for NET scores and 30% for the interview.

Candidates who meet the requirements for the UGC NET will now be able to apply for three categories:
- PhD admission for assistant professor positions and with a JRF PhD admission for assistant professor positions without a JRF
- only for PhD program admission
- It’s crucial to remember that the UGC NET results will account for 70% of the weight when compiling a merit list for PhD admissions, with interviews accounting for the remaining 30%.

UGC has also announced in the notification for PhD Admission 2024, making NET mandatory, that starting from the next session, i.e., from June 2024, the announcement of UGC NET results will be made in 3 categories. This includes the existing categories of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and eligibility for Assistant Professor recruitment, along with eligibility for PhD admissions. Additionally, the result of UGC NET by NTA will now be issued in percentile, and candidates’ marks will be released.
