According to a recent decision, Madagascar has been assigned to host the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games to be held in the Maldives in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic. The event was entrusted to the Maldives last year, but members of the Indian Ocean Island Games Federation voted to transfer these games to Madagascar.

This decision has been made as a result of the challenges faced in organizing the program during the coronovirus crisis in Maldives. The Maldives requested the 2023 games to be postponed until 2025, but the IOIGF refused to avoid a six-year gap between versions of the multi-sport event.
