Every year, 29 August is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. The first National Sports Day was celebrated on 29 August 2012 on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyanchand, the star of India’s hockey team.
This day is celebrated in honor of this great hockey player and the best players of the country are honored with honors like Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dhyanchand Award and Dronacharya Award.

History of National Sports Day:

National Sports Day is also known as National Sports Day in any part of India. In 1979, the Indian Postal Department paid tribute to Major Dhyanchand after his death and renamed the National Stadium of Delhi to Major Dhyanchand Stadium, Delhi. In 2012, it was announced.That one day should be celebrated as National Sports Day with the aim of spreading awareness about the spirit of the game and propagating the message of various sports and for this again Major Dhyanchand was paid tribute on his birth anniversary and on 29 August It was announced to celebrate National Sports Day in India.

About Major Dhyanchand:

Major Dhyanchand was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad and was a great hockey player of his time. He was known as a hockey player’s star or “hockey magician” because, during his period, his team won gold medals at the Olympics during the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He played hockey internationally from 1926 to 1949 for 23 years. He played a total of 185 matches in his career and scored 570 goals.He was so devoted to hockey that he used to practice for the game on the moonlit night, which brought his name to Dhyanchand. In 1956, Dhyanchand was awarded the Padma Bhushan Award, he was the third citizen to receive this honor.
