The Indian Railways Ministry is working on a mission mode with the goal of turning the Indian Railways into a Green Railway by 2030. Also, the Ministry of Railways has taken several major initiatives towards tackling global warming and climate change.

Initiatives by Ministry of Railways:
- To achieve green certification for sustainable equipment and installations / stations with improvement in energy efficiency of railway electrification, locomotives and trains, bio-toilets in coaches and dependence on renewable sources for their energy needs and achieving zero carbon emissions Is part of the strategy.
- Indian Railways has completed electrification of over 40,000 (RKM) (63 per cent of broad gauge routes), with 18,605 km of electrification work done during 2014-20. Earlier, electrification of only 3,835 km route was completed during the period 2009–14. Indian Railways has set a target of electrification of 7000 km route for the year 2020-21.
- It is planned to electrify all routes of broad gauge (BG) by December 2023. Railways have also taken several initiatives to promote solar energy.
- Indian Railways is working to exploit 500 mega watts (MW) of energy capacity through a rooftop solar panel (developer model). For this, tenders have already been floated for 245 MW solar plants and the target is December 2022.
- One such 1.7 MW project has already been set up at Bina (Madhya Pradesh) in collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and is currently in the process of extensive testing. It is the first solar project of its kind in the world.
- In the wind energy sector, a 103 MW wind-based power plant has already been commissioned, with 26 MW in Rajasthan (Jaisalmer), 21 MW in Tamil Nadu and 56.4 MW in Maharashtra (Sangli).
- Railways have also planned to set up 200 MW capacity wind power plants in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka in the next 2 years.
- Apart from this, Indian Railways has installed more than 2,44,000 bio-toilets in a total of 69,000 coaches of its trains under the green initiative.
