Answer Highlights – 21 May 2020 Current Affairs

(1) 20 May
World Bee Day means World Bee Day is celebrated globally on 20 May every year. Today, on 20 May, Anton Jansa, the father of modern beekeeping techniques, was born in Slovenia in 1734.

(2)  Lata Mangeshkar
Popular singer Lata Mangeshkar has sung a song saluting the spirit of self-reliant India, titled JAYTU BHARATAM. He has dedicated this song to the people of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

(3) Ministry of Human Resource Development
A new mobile application called “National Test Abhyas” has been launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. This app has been developed by the National Testing Agency.

(4) 2 Million
India has provided US $ 2 million in aid to the United Nations Relief and Construction Agency working for the welfare of Palestinian refugees. This assistance is provided for UNRWA’s flagship programs and services, including education and health during the crisis situation of coronovirus.

(5) 86th
The e-book edition of his new book ‘Hop On: My Adventures on Boats, Trains and Planes’ was released on the 86th birthday of famous writer Ruskin Bond. This book describes some memorable travel adventures of boats, trains and planes in his childhood. This book tells its readers about many hilarious journeys and travel adventures. Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane has formally resigned from his post. Thabane and his current wife are suspected of plotting to murder his ex-wife nearly three years ago, causing a political crisis in the country. Lesotho’s Finance Minister Moeketsi Majoro has been elected by the parliament as the country’s interim PM.

(7) $ 2 Billion
China has announced a USD 2 billion grant to the WHO Health Assembly to deal with the coronavirus epidemic in two years. An amount of USD 2 billion to be given over two years will be given to support COVID-19 response efforts, especially in developing countries.

(8) May 25th
Domestic flights will resume operations from May 25, 2020 in a calibrated manner. This was announced by Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on May 20, 2020.

(9) Dr. Harsh Verdan
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan will be appointed as the Chairman of the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board on May 22, 2020. Harsh Vardhan is expected to succeed Japan’s Dr. Hiroki Nakatani, who is the current Chairman of the 34-member board.

(10) Maharashtra
Mee Annapurna, an inclusive programe has been launched for the welfare of farmers and Bhoomiputras in Maharashtra. The initiative was announced by Integrated Risk Insurance, an IRDA Licensed insurance intermediary.

(11) Rs. 25,000 crore
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has released Rs. 20,500 crore to regional rural banks and co-operative banks for lending to the farmers. The amount is a part of the Rs. 25,000 crore, which was a refinance facility provided by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to NABARD.

(12) Nepal
Nepal’s new political map shows Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura under Nepal’s territory. The new map was approved by Nepal’s Cabinet recently. The endorsement comes amid Nepal’s border dispute with India.
