World Tuna Day is celebrated globally on 2 May every year. The day has been started by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness about the importance of tuna fish. This day was first celebrated in the year 2017. According to the United Nations, many countries in the world depend on tuna fish for both food security and nutrition. Tuna fish farming is done in more than 96 countries, and their capacity is steadily increasing. World Tuna Day is celebrated for the awareness of fisheries.
In recent years, environmental groups such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have warned that some types of tuna, such as bluefin, are now endangered due to overfishing.
A 2013 stock assessment reported that due to overfishing, bluefin stocks in the North Pacific Ocean declined by more than 96% compared to incomplete levels.

History of World Tuna Day:
World Tuna Day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 2016 after officially adopting the resolution of 71/124. The aim was to clarify the importance of fish conservation management and ensure that a system is needed to prevent tuna stocks from deteriorating. For this reason, on May 2, 2017, the first internationally recognized World Tuna Day was celebrated.
