Poverty Index: Bihar poorest in NITI Aayog's multidimensional poverty

 Recently, the Government of India thinks tank NITI Aayog has released the first Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) to measure poverty at National, State/Union Territory and District levels. According to this index, Bihar has been chosen as the state with the highest level of multidimensional poverty as 51.91 per cent of the state’s population is multidimensionally poor.

 

Jharkhand state ranks second in terms of multidimensional poor with 42.16 percent population. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh at 37.79 per cent, Madhya Pradesh (36.65 per cent) and Meghalaya (32.67 per cent) in the top five poorest states.

Meanwhile, Kerala (0.71 percent), Goa (3.76%), Sikkim (3.82%), Tamil Nadu (4.89%) and Punjab (5.59%) are the top 5 least poverty states across India. Kottayam is the only district in Kerala which has recorded zero poverty in the entire country as per the index.
