Recently, Bhagirathi Amma, the oldest woman to appear for the equivalency exam in India, has passed away at the age of 107 due to age-related ailments. Hailing from the Kollam district of Kerala, Amma decided to continue her education at the age of 105.
Bhagirathi Amma left her education at the age of nine in the third grade. Shatayu was honoured with the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar by the Central Government for his exceptional contribution towards women empowerment.
Condoling her death, the Prime Minister said in a tweet on Friday, “I pay my tributes to respected Bhagirathi Amma. There is a lot to learn from his life journey, especially his never-ending passion for learning new things. I am saddened by his death. My condolences to his family and fans. om Shanti.”

(प्रधानमंत्री ने उनके निधन पर शोक प्रकट करते हुए शुक्रवार को एक ट्वीट में कहा, ‘‘मैं आदरणीय भगीरथी अम्मा को अपनी श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करता हूं। उनकी जीवन यात्रा से, विशेष रूप से नयी चीजें सीखने के प्रति उनके कभी न खत्म होने वाले जज्बे से काफी कुछ सीखने की जरूरत है। उनके निधन से दुखी हूं। उनके परिवार एवं प्रशंसकों के प्रति संवेदना व्यक्त करता हूं। ओम शांति।’’)
