Nepal’s Supreme Court orders Sher Bahadur Deuba to be made PM
Recently, the Supreme Court of Nepal has restored Parliament on Monday, overturning President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s decision to dissolve the Parliament.
Nepal’s Supreme Court on Monday reinstated the dissolved House of Representatives for the second time in nearly five months, in a major blow to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is heading a minority government after losing a trust vote in the House. Along with this, the President of Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba has been ordered to be appointed as the Prime Minister.
A five-member Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Monday also ordered that Nepalese Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba be appointed as the Prime Minister within two days.
On the recommendation of Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had announced the dissolution of the lower house of Parliament for the second time in five months and holding of mid-term elections. Against this decision of Bidya Devi Bhandari, 30 more petitions were filed in the Supreme Court.
On May 22, President Vidya Devi Bhandari dissolved the 275-member lower house for the second time in five months on the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli and announced mid-term elections on November 12 and 19. The Election Commission last week announced the schedule for the mid-term polls amid uncertainty over the elections.
