Bihar produces around 12 crore liters of ethanol and is in the fifth position in ethanol production in the country.
Recently, the Bihar cabinet approved the Ethanol Production Promotion Policy, 2021, which became the first Indian state to introduce an ethanol promotion policy.
This policy allows the extraction of ethanol, which was limited to sugarcane, as well as the surplus quantity of corn. The new policy will allow ethanol production in Bihar, which will be derived from all feedstocks allowed by the National Policy on Biofuels, 2018, and subsequently by the National Biofuels Coordination Committee.
The Legislative Assembly was informed of the cabinet decision by Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi as Industries Minister Shahnawaz Hussain was in the fray in West Bengal for campaigning. As of now, the Government of India has allowed the production of B-heavy jaggery, C-heavy jaggery, grains for human consumption, sugarcane juice, sugar, sugar syrup, surplus rice, and ethanol for maize.
The Ethanol Production Promotion Policy of Bihar, 2021, will promote new standalone ethanol manufacturing units by providing additional capital subsidy up to a maximum of 5 crores at 15% of the cost of plant and machinery. Which provides an additional subsidy for special category investors like SC, ST, EBC, women, disabled people, war widows, acid attack victims, and third gender entrepreneurs.
