Recently, the Union Cabinet has given its approval for an amendment to the Insurance Act 1938, paving the way for 74 percent foreign direct investment in the sector.
At present, the limit of general FDI in life and general insurance with ownership and management control of Indian is 49 percent. According to sources, the cabinet in its meeting approved the amendment to the Insurance Act, 1938. In 2015, the government increased the FDI cap in the insurance sector from 26 percent to 49 percent.
The majority of the major directors and key management persons on the board will be Indian residents, with at least 50 per cent of the directors retaining a certain percentage of profits as independent directors and general reserves. The government has earlier allowed 100 percent foreign direct investment in insurance middlemen.
An increase in FDI will help improve life insurance penetration in the country. At present, life insurance premium as a percentage of GDP is 3.6 percent in the country, which is below the global average of 7.13 percent, and it is worse in general insurance, 0.94 percent of GDP as compared to the world average of 2.88 percent.
