Professor Udupi Ramchandra Rao was born on 10 March 1932 in the Adamaru area of Udupi district of Karnataka state. India has given Prof. In 1975, under the leadership of Udupi Ramchandra Rao, his first satellite ‘Aryabhata’ was successfully launched into space.
Professor Rao also served as the President of the Indian Research Institute (ISRO) and as the Space Secretary of India. Professor Rao passed away on 24 July 2017 at the age of 85.
He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour in 1976, and Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, for the contribution of Professor Rao in space science by the Indian government.
Professor Udupi Ramchandra Rao was India’s first space scientist who was inducted into the Satellite Hall of the Fame in 2013 and the IAF Hall of Fame in 2016.
