Sri Lanka in debt, Sri Lanka extended friendship step towards India, contract for development of Colombo port.
Recently, Sri Lanka has awarded the contract for the development of Colombo Port’s Western Container Terminal to India. The terminal will be developed by a joint venture company formed between India and Japan. Sri Lanka will give this project on a 35-year lease to India.
A few weeks before this decision the Sri Lankan government had cancelled the contract for the development of a terminal at this port. The Sri Lankan Cabinet recently approved the development of the West Container Terminal at Colombo South Port.
An official statement said that the Sri Lankan cabinet approved the development of Colombo South Port’s West Container Terminal on Monday. It will be developed by a joint company with the Government of India and Japan.
The statement said that the proposed project was sent to the High Commission of India and the Japanese Embassy after receiving approval from the negotiating committee on the basis of Banao, Adopt and Hand (BOT).
