In 2012, after a proposal for the large-scale redevelopment of these historic docklands, UNESCO included them in the list of World Heritage in danger.
Recently, the World Heritage Committee has announced the removal of Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City from the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Dock of Liverpool was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 for its role as a major trading port in the formation of the British Empire.
The city consisted of six locations including Pier Head, Albert Dock and William Brown Street. The six localities in Liverpool’s historic Docklands played an important role in developing the world’s major trading centre in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The UNESCO committee has decided to remove this status of Liverpool after the secret ballot. The heritage list is designed to protect and mark buildings, monuments and other sites, and this decision to remove Liverpool would affect the city’s reputation.
UNESCO is the short form of ‘United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’. UNESCO is a body of the United Nations. Its task is to promote international peace through education, nature and social science, culture and communication. India is a member country of UNESCO since 1946.
UNESCO has 193 member states (excluding the US and Israel) and seven associate member states and two observer member states. Its headquarter is in Paris (France). It sponsors literacy-enhancing programs and also supports the conservation of World Heritage buildings and parks.
