(अमेरीका में 26 अगस्त 1920 को 19वें संविधान संशोधन के जरिए पहली बार महिलाओं को मतदान का अधिकार दिया गया था| इसके बाद महिलाओं को समानता का दर्जा दिलाने के लिए संघर्ष करने वाली महिला वकील बेल्ला अब्ज़ुग के प्रयास से 1971 से 26 अगस्त को महिला समानता दिवस’ के रूप में मनाया जाने लगा| इससे पहले अमेरिका में महिलाओं को द्वितीय श्रेणी नागरिक का दर्जा मिलता था|)
