INS Khukri: After serving the Indian Navy for 32 years, INS Khukri decommissioned on 23 December 2021 after making 30 rounds of the world. It was the first indigenously built missile corvette ship.
INS Khukri: Recently, INS Khukri has been decommissioned on 23 December 2021 after 32 years of excellent service to the country. It was the first indigenously built missile corvette ship. Its farewell ceremony was held in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
In this program, the national flag, the ensign of the Navy and the decommissioning pennant were lowered at sunset. The chief guest at the event was Vice-Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command. In addition, some serving and retired former commanding officers of the ship were also present in the decommissioning ceremony.
This corvette was built on 23 August 1989 by Mazagon Postal Shipbuilders and had the distinction of being part of both the Western and Eastern fleets. The ship was commissioned in Mumbai by the then Defense Minister Krishna Chandra Pant and Sudha Mulla, wife of the late Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla of the MVC, with Commander (now retired Vice Admiral) Sanjeev Bhasin as its first commanding officer.
The corvette ship was commanded by 28 commanding officers. INS Khukri covered a distance of over 6,44,897 nautical miles, which is equivalent to circumambulating the globe 30 times. This ship was attached to the Gorkha Brigade of the Indian Army. This is the reason why Gorkha Brigade chief Lt Gen PN Ananthanarayan took part in the farewell ceremony.
Corvette Ship:
Corvette is a small warship. which is traditionally the smallest class of ship. A corvette is used as a coastal patrol vessel, missile boat and fast attack ship. Such ships are usually deployed in areas where there is a high risk of sea intrusion.
