Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel death anniversary: The 71st death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of India is being celebrated on 15th December. He was a Bharat Ratna in the true sense, who not only played an important role in independence but also made an important contribution in uniting the country after that.

Shankar, who was the political secretary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, writes in his book ‘My Memoirs with Sardar Patel’, ‘Mahatma Gandhi expected that Jammu and Kashmir would become a part of India and rejected the two-nation theory.’ He writes that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel left this decision entirely to Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. Sardar was of the opinion, ‘If the Maharaja considers that the interests of him and his state are in going with Pakistan, then he will not come in his way.’

 

Sardar Patel said, ‘If Jinnah is ready to include such a state with Hindu majority population, where the ruler is Muslim, then why cannot Sardar merge the Muslim majority state i.e. Kashmir, whose ruler is Hindu.
