Kalpana Chawla was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal. She was the youngest of four siblings. In the year 1988, Kalpana Chawla joined NASA. Kalpana Chawla started her first space mission on 19 November 1997 at the age of just 35.

Space Shuttle Columbia took off on STS-87 with 6 astronauts in its first flight. In which Kalpana had spent about 372 hours in space, traveling 1.04 million miles. On his second journey at the age of 41. On 1 February 2003, Kalpana Chawla was returning to Earth from space with her 6 other companions. His space shuttle Columbia Shuttle STS-107 was at an altitude of about two lakh feet above the Earth. In the next 16 minutes, his vehicle was about to land in the US city of Texas. It was discovered that only then its contact with NASA has been lost.
By the time contact was made, it was found that the debris of the spacecraft had spread over an area of about 160 km in the Dallas area of Texas. Seven astronauts including Kalpana Chawla died in this accident.
