On Saturday, the Pakistani government’s Twitter account was blocked in India. The social media business claimed that this action was taken in answer to a legal request from the Centre.

Earlier this year, this was discovered that India ranked second in terms of requesting information from platform users and was one of the top five nations to order Twitter to censor material throughout the reporting period for all types of users.

The microblogging platform reported receiving 326 legal requests to ban information posted by verified journalist and news organization accounts in the last 6 months of 2021, 114 of which originated from India and accounted for more than a third of all blocking requests.

The top four countries that made such demands on Twitter were India, Pakistan, Russia, and Turkey.

349 verified journalists and media organization accounts from across the globe have been the target of 326 relevant laws, according to Twitter.

This is a 103% rise from the number of accounts during the prior reporting period (Jan – Dec 2021). Legal petitions filed by Pakistan (48), Turkey (48),  Russia (55), and India are mostly to blame for this surge (114).
