Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has just emerged from what his critics called a dramatic play to live another day in the midst of an unprecedented crisis in his state. A day after fresh protests broke out on the streets of Imphal and continued till late night, unconfirmed reports emerged in Manipur on Friday that Singh was considering resignation.
Ground report from Manipur:
- Meitei and Kuki violence, caste riots in Manipur.
- Peace and normalcy seem distant in violence-torn Manipur.
- In violence-torn Manipur, the information was initially taken lightly as the chief minister stuck to his word despite violence continuing for over 50 days.
- As the day broke in Manipur, CM’s meeting with Governor Anusuiya Uike at 1 pm was officially confirmed.

The Sangai Express, based in Manipur’s capital Imphal, reported sources that the Center has given the chief minister a choice to either resign or face dismissal, adding that “New Delhi” has told the chief minister several times. . The call was made and the call was also “unusually harsh”.
In the latest case, two Meitei Village Defense volunteers were killed in an encounter with Kuki terrorists at a location between Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts in the early hours of Thursday.
Thousands of women protesters, angry at the government’s failure to protect “innocent lives”, gathered at the Khwairamband Ima market in the evening.
They fought a pitched battle with the police to march with the body of a deceased to the official residence of the chief minister.
The police are having difficulty in controlling the protesters who were highly critical of the government, especially the chief minister.
The evening protests in Manipur came as a double whammy for the Biren Singh government, which was still reeling from its “misadventure” of preventing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from traveling to violence-hit Churachandpur by road. Due to which Rahul Gandhi was forced to travel by helicopter in the hilly district.
In Bishnupur, the Congress leader’s convoy was stopped by the police from proceeding further, following which local residents staged a massive protest. The police had to fire several teargas shells to disperse the crowd.
Later, in protest against the police action, the angry mob tried to burn the BJP office in Bishnupur as well.
That the central government is losing faith in Biren Singh is evident when the home ministry recently shirked its responsibilities, saying it would take care of the hills while the state government was only tasked with restoring peace in the valley.
Must focus. Home Minister Amit Shah had told this to the Chief Minister on 25 June. It is clear from this that the Chief Minister is living on borrowed time.
Growing support for Rahul in Manipur and massive protests over the killings made it clear that the government was losing the confidence of the people of the Valley as well.
It now appears that the days of Biren Singh, who has been serving as the chief minister of the volatile northeastern state since 2017, are numbered. However, a few hours later the 62-year-old footballer-turned-politician came out of trouble.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister postponed his meeting with the Governor till three o’clock in the afternoon. This gave more time to surround all the supporters there.
Finally, when the chief minister stepped out of his residence to go to the Raj Bhavan, barely 400 meters away, to tender his resignation, women supporters stopped his motorcade.
Now they started appealing that the Chief Minister should not resign. While a cabinet colleague of the chief minister was reassuring the crowd, a woman supporter allegedly snatched the resignation letter and tore it.
The torn letter went viral, reiterating the chief minister’s intention of not allowing anyone to suspect.
