On January 15, 1949, Field Marshall KM Cariappa became the first Indian Army chief of independent India. The festival is mainly observed to mark the time when Lieutenant General KM Carriappa became the chief commander of the Indian army.
He succeeded General Roy Francis Butcher who was the last British head of the Indian army in the British Raj on the 15th of January 1949. Approximately two lakh soldiers comprised the Indian Army when Cariappa was its commander-in-chief.
