World Braille Day
Every Jan 4th, World Braille Day is celebrated as an expression of appreciation for the legacy of Louis Braille, who invented the braille writing system that changed the lives of millions of blind people worldwide. The day is not only a remembrance of Braille’s history but also a commemoration of today’s struggle for the same equality in society for the blind.
History of World Braille Day- 2024
Born and raised blind, Louis Braille, a Frenchman made his tragedy worth the pain by turning it into a revolutionary invention. He went to a special school for visually impaired kids at the age of ten and it was there that he thought of a raised-dot system which later on became known as Braille codex. A brilliant system was created which is now called Braille and comprises six dots per group permitting blind people to feel and read.
However, it took quite a while before the world accepted braille reading as the major way for blind people to read. World Braille Day was set aside in remembrance of Louis Braille on the 4th of January 2018, and it is currently observed globally.
