World Mountain Day- 2023
Every year, international Mountain Day falls on 11 December in an attempt to encourage all mountains across the world to conserve their natural resources and adopt responsible management.
International Mountain Day- 2023 Theme
By the UN, the decade for ecosystem restoration 2021 – 2030; theme of this year’s International Day of the Mountains. The decade is co-chaired by the Fao and UNEP. Its objective is to provide political will, scientific support, and finance to mountain ecosystem conservation initiatives as well as curb its destruction.
History of International Mountain Day
However, the history of International Mountain Day goes back to the UN-sponsored conference on environment and development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. At this landmark conference, Chapter 13 of Agenda 21, titled “Management of Fragile Ecosystems: The World Summit on “Sustainable Mountain Development” emphasized the importance of preserving and managing mountains for sustainable development.
Importance of World Mountain Day- 2023
Celebrating World Mountain Day- 2023 serves the purpose of reminding people about the great importance of mountain environments that should be saved. In essence, mountain health is a concern not only about the present but also about tomorrow.
Although mountains are threatened by climate change and unsustainable development which are threats to people and the planet respectively. Mountaintop species and communities adapt or flee from warmer climates due to compromised water flow from climate change. When clearing forests for farmland, settlements, or infrastructures on steep slopes, it results in soil erosion and habitat loss. Downstream water quality is affected by erosion and pollution. According to IPCC, all endemic mountain species could go extinct before they can even be discovered, with up to 90-84%.
