First Black Leader: A day after being elected as Wales’ first minister, Vaughan Gething took the helm of the national government on Thursday, making history as the First Black person to do so in Europe.

First Black Leader: Welsh is set to appoint its first black leader after Vaughan Gething was announced as the winner of the Welsh Labor leadership election on Saturday.Gething replaces Mark Drakeford, 69, who announced in December he was stepping down. The 50-year-old said he would be “honoured to become the first black leader in any European country” when he becomes Welsh first minister next week.

Born in Zambia in 1974, Vaughan Gething is the recently elected leader of Welsh Labour. His parents are Zambian and Welsh.
When he was two years old, his family relocated to Wales; but, because of discrimination against his father at work, they eventually landed in England. In addition to being the first black president of the Welsh Trades Union Congress and the Welsh National Union of Students, Gething was a trade union lawyer and a graduate of Cardiff and Aberystwyth universities.

In 2013, he became the first black minister in any of the UK’s devolved nations, having entered the Welsh legislature in 2011. Gething was Wales’s Minister of Health during the COVID-19 epidemic and, more recently, of Economy.
With a narrow majority of 51.7% of the vote, he emerged victorious in the Welsh Labor leader election and pledged to tackle the country’s mounting cost-of-living crises, farmers’ woes, and problems in the health and education systems.
After the Senedd was established in 1999, Gething will be the fifth First Minister of Wales if the Welsh Parliament confirms his appointment.

Early Life and Background

Welsh-born Gething was born in Zambia in 1974 to a Zambian mother and father. He worked as a trade union lawyer while attending the universities of Aberystwyth and Cardiff.
