Today in Ukraine too, it’s Christmas Day

  • Today Christmas Day is being observed in Ukraine, an unusual date for this celebration.
  • The reason for this shift is that Ukraine has a large Orthodox Christian population, which traditionally celebrates Christmas on January 7.
  • Both Ukraine and Russia follow the Julian calendar, celebrating their Christmas on January 7. But in July 2023 Ukrainian President Voldomir Zelensky signed an act naming December 25 as Christmas (after the Gregorian calendar common to Western countries).
  • Despite all the festivities, tensions remain between Russia and Ukraine due to last year’s conflict.
  • The main factor underlying this conflict is that Ukraine joined the Western Alliance, including NATO–a move very much opposed by Russia and President Vladimir Putin.
