Sports Ministry Bars New WFI Body from Taking Office

December 24 A major development hit the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). On December 21, elections were held in which Sanjay Singh, a close associate of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, became the new President.

After the victory, WFI was quick to announce that Gonda in Uttar Pradesh would host a Junior National Championship tournament starting on December 28. Notably, Gonda is the parliamentary seat of BJP MP Brij Bhushan who had previously been accused of sexually exploiting wrestlers. This controversy is thought to be an important factor behind the Sports Ministry’s firm decision. For this reason, the Sports Ministry has already told the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to appoint an ad-hoc committee to run the Wrestling Federation of India.

Karnataka Schools, Colleges Hijab Ban Lifted

On December 22, Commons-led Congress Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the Hijab ban had been lifted throughout Karnataka schools and colleges.

This decision follows the recent incident that flared up on December 31, 2021. Six Muslim female students were told not to wear a hijab at one college in Udupi district and then went on strike in protest. The repercussions reverberated across the state, evoking a symbolic level when some students who were connected to Hindu organizations went to college wearing saffron shawls.

IONS 2023 Summit Closes in Thailand

On December 22, the four-day Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) summit climaxed in Thailand at a gathering hosted by the Royal Thai Navy in Bangkok. Naval Chiefs and senior representatives from 27 IONS member countries and observer nations participated in the 8th conference of this organization.

Under the chairmanship of Thailand this year, which took over from Indonesia last time round, it elaborated an action plan for two days with a focus on joint tackling problems and enhancing cooperation in areas such as maritime security issues.
