Country’s first live hearing took place in Madhya Pradesh High Court
On December 21, the Madhya Pradesh High Court under Chief Justice Ravi Malimath broke new ground by conducting the country’s first live video hearing. This marks the start of a revolutionary approach to legal proceedings. The pilot project is currently confined only to the courts at Patan and Sihora in Jabalpur district.
- After successful implementation in Patan and Sihora, it is planned to expand live hearings out to all lower courts across the state.
- In India, this will be the first time live arrangements have been made within a state’s High Court jurisdiction for district-tehsil courts.
- The highly ambitious project envisions the implementation of live video arrangements in 219 courts by the end of this year.
Olympian Sakshi Malik quit wrestling
On December 21, in a surprising turn of events, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elected Sanjay Singh as its new president. Sakshi Malik, an Olympian from Rohtak in Haryana announced recently that she was giving up wrestling.
- Sakshi Malik, who won a bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
- Her glorious career is further burnished by medals in gold, silver, and bronze (in that order) from the Commonwealth Games.
- She also won four more medals at the Asian Championships: three of them bronze, one a silver.
- In particular, Sanjay Singh’s win by 47 votes with the support of ex-WFI president and BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh is worth noting.
- Ousted from her post as Joint Secretary in the WFI body led by Brij Bhushan Singh, Anita Sheoran–a Commonwealth Games gold medalist wrestler-was defeated by Vijay Singh.
Current Affairs The WFI earlier went through a revolutionary upheaval when some women wrestlers made allegations of sexual exploitation against then-president Brij Bhushan Singh. The scandal resulted in the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) dissolving the WFI and has seen an ad-hoc committee formed to monitor new office bearer elections.
